#aussieED Archive
#aussieED was founded on the belief that all teachers, and students, should have unlimited access to Professional Development, on their own terms, to improve their teaching, their schools and change the lives of the students they encounter. Since then, we have embarked on a mission to reach educators, not only in Australia but, all around the globe. We want to smash the barriers that prevent teachers from easily connecting and learning with each other. To that end, we have developed a regular Ed-chat each Sunday on twitter at #aussieED. The chat allows all teachers, leaders, administrators and all those connected with education to meet on an unbiased platform and discuss the real issues that effect what happens in classrooms everywhere. Our chats are authentic because we are real teachers walking the same walk that so many do everyday.
Sunday September 11, 2016 6:30 AM EDT
"Appow" Welcome to tonight. Before we begin Let's acknowledge the traditional teachers of this great land https://t.co/tvUTnL6rvP
Hello - flying straight across from - love getting Sunday nights to myself!
wait for me gotta get my columns organised!
it will be very interesting Brett and goes to the heart of why we teach
Will be interesting - at the end of the day, definitions will reflect how the person believe teaching ought to be
Yay, Tweetdeck lives! Hi, Anna here.
on the iPhone tonight only one to worry about
haha I'm working on multiple tabs tonight! :)
A1. Simple answer for a simple question: effective teaching is whatever brings about authentic learning!
A1 Teaching that actually ensure the students learn what is meant to be learned?
Asbjørn aka a digital viking from the north once again trying to multitask for this round of
The fact that a 'teacher of teachers' can answer the question could be at the root of the issue
A1 matching learning goals to students entry skills and assessment.
Hi all people! Jon from Perth Hills here ... looking forward to the chat!
A1 Effective teaching is continually providing a learning environment so students succeed beyond their current development.
A1 any teaching that allows students to make progress, enjoy & engage with the content & make connections
A1: Delivering the best learning environment for your students.
A1 to me, effective teaching is when we can light a spark in students and get them excited and engageed about a particular thing
A1 effective teaching empowers learners, grows mindsets and continues once the class is over
A1 creating ss who are critical thinking lifelong learners
I agree, it is not about the teaching, it is about the learning.
i mean q1 (need more coffee)
Hi Myles, Classroom teacher from rural New Zealand, most of you will be well versed with South Taranaki I am sure.
A1: Encompassing the holistic learner’s needs - from environment, to differentiation, to pastoral care.
G'day all, I've gone straight to the heart of the chat tonight? How can we discuss Effective teaching if we can't define it?
A1- Effective teaching is when T is aware & able respond to Ss lng needs instead of sticking to 'the plan'
A1: Effective teaching is about developing opportunities that allow others to learn. To change. And to grow.
Hi everyone, Davis from Newcastle, AP at Tenambit PS and proud member of
A1: Effective teaching promotes effective learning; sometimes outside of expectations; students are excited by what they learn
Barb here - being true to your students and yourself
A1 Effective teaching is matching learning design to the desired student developmental outcomes.
What is Effective Teaching?
effective T is finding a students academic, social or emotional need and enhancing their und-ing through targeted T
A1 - making sure that there is learning happening - I have seen highly effective teachers where there was no learning happening :)
of course the notion of 'authentic' learning raises as many questions as 'effective' teaching does Far from simple
Mate, sarcasm is hard to read in 140 characters...I genuinely hoped you could add more to the discussion ... your call
A1: Effective teaching is about reaching every student, differentiating, attending to detail and sound practice across all KLA's.
effective teaching is research based, feedback driven with clear goals, engaging and student centered
A1: teaching that inspire and live on
Great definition of effective teaching!
A1 Effective Ting is learning Ss then sharing knowledge & understanding with a side of empathy
that seems like a contradiction but I think I understand what you mean engaged but not necessarily learning
https://t.co/R6pe88cPhw
having a clear definition of effective at heart of ethos. Setting, reaching and reviewing goals
A1 Brings about a change in behaviour, attitudes, skills, knowledge
A1 Effective teaching produces development crises.
I would say effective tchng is entirely dependent on the context & moment.
it also goes to the heart of motivation and if a student can be intrinsically motivated to progress
A1 effective teaching is ensuring as many Ss as possible are provided with the best learning opportunities. Value adding 2 all Ss
Very excited for a critical topic tonight for our chat https://t.co/ZnLKELwzs2
and being able to see /document impact. Holistic impact to be effective
A1. Meeting the NEEDS of the students sitting in our classroom.
Emphasis on "learning" rather than "authentic". I could have said "real/deep/genuine" - that's all I meant!
2) diagnose student progress, 3) fight for their students’ learning, 4) personalise learning, 5) provide meaningful feedback
efficient in teaching as a process ....
Possibly, although any adjective introduces the 'ought' line of argument. Education is a political activity
A1: knowing your students/what they need to be successful, using strategies/pedagogy that engages & encourages independence.
A1 Effective teaching produces broad developmental outcomes.
is that can or can't Brett? I doubt if anybody serious about this could answer in 140 characters anyway!
Cameron from Melbourne, running late tonight in the middle of finishing my Masters assignment and getting kids to sleep
Hi everyone, David from Newcastle, AP at Tenambit PS and proud member of
A1. Learning that is relevant to Ss lives/personalised. Promotes independence, interdependence and motivation
how does that make them 'highly effective' teachers?! I would think learning is the def of effective teaching?
For you (I forgot the hashtag) on what effective teachers do according to research literature. https://t.co/9E7Wa9iEI3
When I looked to research I found 5 things that effective teachers do - https://t.co/5hfq95t6DC - 1) purposefully design learning, ...
Q1 effective teaching means providing children with the tools to become the best learners they can be
Fair enough. The focus on learning makes sense to me. Any adjective is problematic as draws attention away
Yes, teaching = means to an end. Happy to think about pedagogy/curriculum so long as we focus on learning https://t.co/m25zYRIXEs
I agree, it is not about the teaching, it is about the learning.
Not sure how asking a question about defining Effective teaching is any of those things...
Effective teaching allows for effective learning. Students reaching their full potential.
. Hi Leonie Hastings NZ.A1 Effective tchng IMO is when Ss become indep. engaged motivated inquirers & learners with your guidance
Michelle in Saigon here !
A. Eft Tching - engaging students & encourage learning wherever Ss are on their journey
is lead member of our eCoP, always contributing and looking out for newer members!
how do we know what their potential is?
And cycle of formative assmt, planning & reflecting is always ongoing in the background
Effective teaching is in the eye of the beholder, their values & the context
A1: Facilitating questioning, risk taking, debate & active learners
I think that we always need to think about behavior for learning
Surely you could bring valuable insight to the topic, the door is open... Unless you choose to close it
how do you measure all that! I can teach effectively and test and Ss learn for short term, but longer term?
A1 understands where learners are then supports them all to move on and deepen their understandings. Is adaptive & responsive
Effective teaching helps Ss connect what learning to the real world.
Absolutely!! https://t.co/HJTW0g3fh2
A1. Simple answer for a simple question: effective teaching is whatever brings about authentic learning!
so when they are in school they leave the 'real world'?
are you in tonight? Say hi to this season's 'ers!
How can we ask teachers to be effective if we can express what that is? Is that our real issue? https://t.co/x4hijoIc47
because there IS NO definition. Thanks for the chat :)
Effective teaching is researched based, with clear goals, feedback driven, engaging and student focused
A1 Effective teaching relies on mediating tools.
yes; continuous cycle of knowing your students & applying appropriate purposeful pedagogies & feedback.
Hit enter too soon. We help them create a starting platform to create connections.
Hey everyone! Sana here from India.
Late but here...A1. Effective teaching is meeting your learner where they are...finding what it takes to reach and teach them.
Effective teaching- How well we teach = how well they learn (Archer)
Yes, assessing learnign effectiveness is an essential part of the process indeed
. Also life long learners, not future learners but now.A S once sd I don't want to be a future lrner.I want to be a learner now.
A1. Aiming to create a learning environment that meets the needs of every learner within that environment in order to maximize L.
Absolutely. We can't overcome the ought question & politics of who gets to decide that
Close the door if you wish... Perhaps we can actually share thoughts another time
of course the student & their learning (with teacher knowledge of how to move them forward) is at the centre of teaching.
Oh yes, research needs to drive practice or it's a car with no rego
A1: you know effective teaching is happening when your Ss can question further into their learning
A1.2 effective teaching is relative to each student. What works for one may not for another. https://t.co/Nbr2dLVsnn
I'm one of ex studentswelcome to a brill platform with excellent educators fast professional development
Absolutely! When they generate more questions than answers! ;) https://t.co/UiVmWr1BhF
A1: you know effective teaching is happening when your Ss can question further into their learning
A1 effective teaching helps/assists/facilitates learners to learn.
Hi Everyone, glad to be here for the chat.
A2. Good point - if we can't define Effective T it starts me thinking about what others perceive an effective S to be?
A1. Effective teaching helps Ss know how to learn not just what to learn.
perhaps that is why teachers won't be replaced by robots. We have a number of pedagogies for different Ss and lessons.
A measure of a good teacher is to look for student progress over time rather than just a snapshot
A1) Hi Spiri from States...Someone who can create effective learning environment, cultivating sense of mutual respect with Ss
Is effective teaching subjective? Is it context-based? (yes!)
Effective teaching automatically leads to a great satisfaction in Ts. If you sleep with a smile you are doing it right! ☺️
A2 John Hattie I have ref if those are interested
140 characters is certainly a challenge when it comes to complex topics. I wrote ... 1/2
EFFECTIVE is a cyclic word in this context! As learning environment is a ever evolving concept, thus ever changing hopefully 4better
Q1 effective teaching involves the whole child knowing your sts, your curriculum & strong pedagogy https://t.co/N8fBrLwk6k
so true. And how do we measure it?
Isn't effective teaching simply maximising your impact on student learning?
just keeping pushing! You know where they're starting from...
Indeed, it's an ought question, and insitutions need to define it, but is AITSL up to it?
A2 I've just bought Jim Knights High Impact instruction.
A2- John Hattie I'm a big fan! Getting the T-shirt soon
... 3 blog posts & felt they didn't touch the sides of 'teacher effectiveness'. 2/2
A2. An oldie but a goodie: the Quality Teaching Framework is relevant to teaching in all contexts https://t.co/s7Nr0bR0W3
also effective teaching protocol of Te Kohahitanga - Bishop et al
https://t.co/rGhE05CG5S
Lesson Planning: Resisting the urge to connect the dots for Ss... I need to place the dots and let Ss connect for themselves!
Q2: Who doesn’t?! I’d think if its not part of the problem ed researchers are trying to solve they are solving the wrong probs!
It cannot be universally defined, except to say it reflects how someone believe it ought to be
. Effective means successful in producing desired results (Mr Google). Ts need to be be facilitators of learning for Ss IMO
what is impact is what is effective
Hi Carl! Good evening! How are you? Hope you had a fabulous b-day weekend 😊
A2 Marzano asks what is the best use of class time? Big fan. ,
That is my WALL OF WISDOM
Stew you suggest there isn't an answer. Is it worth trying to come to common understanding?
A2: Great research from UNESCO / OECD. In Australia, I do like Hattie but the king is for our Koori kids.
Hi Anna! Great to see you here! Hope all is well 😊
"That look" in their eyes which shouts out loud that they have grasped is a super feeling that you have taught effectively
Will it help me with that ICT course? 😜
A2 there are many, e.g. Hattie but too easy to become checklists. Need to use research to inform and help shape practice
A1 - knowing your students, building respect and rapport in the classroom and finding a way to engage your content with Ss
totally agree. Cannot be effective without focus on emotional behaviour and social needs. All interlinked
Effective teaching provides opportunities for students to be fully engaged in Australian Curriculum.
A2. I know many have been citing Hattie tonight. I'd love to highlight this important counterbalance https://t.co/PT3D7EwPwv
A2 I use instructional design theory for teaching, Robert Wager, Dick and Carey, Robert gagne to name a few.
Effective teaching is clearly defined by John Hattie and Dylan William
Q1. Effective? Depends on context.
.A2 A variety in diff ways eg Hattie, Ken Robinson (with 2xLearning). So many changing all the time.
To be an effective educator we first need to meet our students on a human level. Reach out and touch their humanity.
A2 Most (all?) texts/experts/research push effectiveness measures without clearly identifying the scope of their measures.
Surely AITSL is our common understanding, if we don't like that, we need to start there, or not?
so how we teach & the teaching we aspire to reflects our beliefs.
A2: Good morning from Ontario, Canada! I'm a Hattie 'believer'!
. A2/2. Couls even be the T in the class next door modelling it
A2 Hattie, Timperlay, Tomlinson, Archer, Hunter, Spires & Stone...list goes on...
Eeffective T also reaches out & connects & makes networks with other Ts 2improve own PD &in turn work with Ss 2 broaden Learning
Hello Late, but now I'm I'm. Ines from Germany
Q2- quality teaching framework and teaching standards
Very much agree but we still want to be able to check that we are being effective in some form https://t.co/8zQc8O0MHN
A2. I know many have been citing Hattie tonight. I'd love to highlight this important counterbalance https://t.co/PT3D7EwPwv
I wonder, can a school/system come to shared understanding about what it means for them?
If I hear Hattie's name one more time... Oh wait, that was me! :)
A2 How do we define something that needs so much research? I think Ts are working on this problem every day!
+ "Every child is entitled to the promise of a teacher’s optimism, enthusiasm, time, and energy." ~ Carol Ann Tomlinson
A3 Giving the ss control of the learning
need 4 support from senior members and local government direction also crucial. Wrap around service.
A2: I think Bloom's is a superb tool to ensure effective teaching. Also keeping learning styles in mind. Multiple intelligences.
A2 Most measures of teacher effectiveness only measure the shortest of short memory recall, which is rather worthless.
A2 yes I Iike Teach Like A PIRATE also.
so we need to tease out the meaning of effective teaching in our contexts, with our kids.
A3 they are merging into the students flow, creating a new symbiose of learning space
Perhaps q3 (and 4) may help ?
A1: effective can only be measured at the end, in education it's hard to measure results
I agree! harder in a secondary setting, in non-core subjects.
learning styles and MI have been discounted over and over again
A3 t are constantly improving delivery and helping s make connections
A3. Ts are mentally juggling being sage on the stage, guide on the side &/or mentor in the middle - each useful at different times
A1 and in addition develops each students fullest potential..
A3) listening, reacting to the ss responses or lack of
They do (e.g. PP, QT, and now Hattie). Arguably what is needed is to keep having discussion
A3. Can't speak for teachers just for me- Questioning at all levels, challenging given responses, encouraging, pointing out failure
Good point. Does AITSL provide a clear, shared picture of what effective teaching is?
That is because there are many ways of being effective All about context and people involved https://t.co/7RhA8lZyvO
A2 How do we define something that needs so much research? I think Ts are working on this problem every day!
A1: Effective teaching is responsive (to student learning needs) teaching, that engages students in hungering for learning.
A2 the thing Hattie always misses is context and context is king for learning.
A3. Sharing the learning & teaching. Letting Ss lead.
Q2. Too many to cite. Many striving to understand changing contexts.
A2 For those talking about Visible Learning's measure of teacher effectiveness, I written this against it. https://t.co/O3oMTK3uW1
. A3.Where to next? This is working what else can I do? This didn't work what can I do to change it? Where/who else can I go to?
Effective T is about , teaching a love of learning and meeting outcomes
You need to look at many things, observations, mark books, progress checks, marking, student voice ect
+ To be an effective teacher today one must reach the young people in their care through their heart and mind.
A3- Synthesising, evaluating, questioning, planning where to next, admitting fails & lng from them
For sure, I'm not against quantifying things. Just need to be aware there are other factors https://t.co/2mURj8LN1b
The Higher Levels of the teacher framework seem like a sensible place to start
Lots of Hattie here. Must be lots of DI fans given the effectiveness of that method.
+ Effective teachers must be inclusive, hope-filled and relational.
I know but I still feel they should be kept in mind. Diff Ss have diff styles of learning
.Loving the questions. Really thought provoking
no. Abstracted, decontextualised, laden with 'impact/Hattie love-in' jargon
explicit teaching , there is L.I, S.C and proficiency scales. They know what Ss know and need to learn
That's wonderful Carl! You are so fortunate to still have her, make it a point to see her often 😊
Exactly: merging into students' flow. Be part of the learning process. Teachers and students as a unit https://t.co/YNBCgbCtFb
A3 they are merging into the students flow, creating a new symbiose of learning space
Totally agree, children need to know you care for them personally before they will trust you to educate them.
he has a lot to answer for
A2: Some of my faves for considering effective teaching - ; ; ;
A3 We use the Danielson FFT to develop a shared understanding of what excellent teaching looks like https://t.co/DHWykmHafI
Effective teaching looks different depending on subject, students, teacher and day of week!
not sure DI is and either/or scenario sometimes it is needed other times not
A3: Teachers feel energised, are learning from their students, are talking & sharing with colleagues & planning what's next!
A3 constantly checking the impact for learners, adjusting and responding to how the learners are reacting to learning situation
A3 negotiating, observing, questioning, listening, giving feedback and feedforward...
Nothing but standing back and watching the results of their hard work and feeling awesome! Congratulate! https://t.co/9uAvvlwcLF
There's flow, interaction and most importantly TRANSFORMATION of learner and teacher
A3 T has taken into account Ss are more than data & come from very diverse emotional, physical and intellectual starting points
thinking how to share with Staff, what made it effective, how know it was effective
Engaging the next step of 30 odd empathetic learning journey's!
exams are pointless when teaching to point of need. Authentic data from work samples is another story
+ (1/2) Teachers in the most exciting and effective differentiated classrooms don’t have all the answers.
A3. Helping create a shared passion for continued learning, questioning and curiosity.
A3 When teachers are being effective, they're just doing what they do. Effective teachers don't need to be super heroes.
A3 "teaching is conscious stream of decisions b4, during & aftr instruction 2 maximise probability of learning taking place"Hunter
+ (2/2) What they do have is optimism and determination.
A3 If they set it up correctly, they are facilitating the learning that the Ss are doing in their collaborative groups.
Not necessarily- IMO it has to be part of not all of tchng
Q1 &. Q2. Effective teaching depends on contexts. Many interesting papers/researchers recognise changing contexts.
Q4- When effective teaching is happening what are 'STUDENTS' doing, saying, thinking and feeling? https://t.co/10qTlMcimy
I am not a number I am a free man!
A3 T is mainly listening, and thinking where to next
A3 reflecting on what made a difference and how to make it more standard practice, be flexible & responsive to Ss changing needs
A3: Doing=As little ‘talking’ as possible. Saying=see above. Thinking=where to next? Feeling=‘I can do this. How can I do it more?
A3 Effective Ts say very little, listen a lot, ask questions, show enthusiasm & provide the conditions so learning can take place
Hello to those participating in tonight's chat. Things are moving extremely fast
A4 I know where I am going
when in my most effective classes I felt redundant as students were leading their learning.
A3 We see students collaborating. We hear "good noise" from our students. Students feel like they are a part of something.
Its also about using clear evidence of success and formative evaluation. Some things do work better than others.
A3: it's the best feeling fur teachers. To recognize that your teaching infects students to learn
Feedback, feedback, feedback here. If it was good yesterday it can be better tomorrow
A3.Facilitating learning, setting highexpectations, learning with, supporting, encouraging, asking the right questions
I think individual teachers can, collaboratively, Deborah. But impact lessened if change imposed
A3: listening, thinking ahead, challenging, encouraging, acknowledging...being present and ready to respond to Ss needs.
They're in the zone and doing what comes naturally: questioning, connecting, creating and celebrating https://t.co/J3mPl9c1Jm
Q4- When effective teaching is happening what are 'STUDENTS' doing, saying, thinking and feeling? https://t.co/10qTlMcimy
A4 they are simply engaged and attending, arguing, questioning, testing. There is high enthusiasm!
A3: Teachers are listening, encouraging, prompting, questioning, modelling a growth mindset, feeling inspired & willing to risk.
A4 *lightbulb moment*, I get that. Thanks for making it easy for me Mr Roberts :)
And at times the best research happens in our classes. We just need to share more often and listen to one another!
A4. Ss are active, engaged, noisy, asking ?s, working out solutions, feeling included and valued...
A4. This is what the Ss are doing to. Part of the collaborative process. https://t.co/H64gs1Lcnq
A3. Helping create a shared passion for continued learning, questioning and curiosity.
Is it too obvious that tonight's questions are inspired by Dufour and Dufour?
A4 Students are reflecting and asking. They are often communicating with others too at some point
A4. Massive engagement levels, questioning and evidencing their resilience in the face of failure! All the emotions that can be!
A4. Sts are thinking critically, questioning courageously, taking risks, embracing confusion, planning & collaborating
A3. Shouldn't that be what are students saying, thinking, doing..! :-)
. A4.I matter. My ideas & opinions are valued. Its ok to get it wrong I'm still learning. As long as I try. Where to next? How else?
+ Effective teaching is done by one who is a learner him/herself.
And yet, so many end up being super heroes for many kids! 😊😊😊
Couldn't agree more Jenny.
Thanks for the share-Always good to compare, contrast and evaluate any information= effective Tchng!
Of course. But if you rate Hattie and you don't use DI it's just cherry picking.
AITSL 1.1 "Teaching strategies to suit the physical, social and intellectual development and characteristics of students".
A3 perhaps we should focus on 'effective learning' rather than 'teaching'
lot of growth mindset here pushing through the challenges, wondering, questioning, hypothesising ,coming to an answer
A3 challenging, scaffolding, simplifying, extending, reminding, responding, "just in timing"
A4 Ss are asking questions the T may not have even though of yet, they are sharing strategies & developing innovations
A4 Students are thinking about their choices and about how best to use their voices
Yes, and the decisions must be informed by assessment used in a formative way. https://t.co/mkzLlQOI8H
A3 "teaching is conscious stream of decisions b4, during & aftr instruction 2 maximise probability of learning taking place"Hunter
there is a lot happening in there https://t.co/rLe4NfxaDv
Effective teaching is meticulously planning and creatively instructing to meet the needs of all the learners in your classroom.
Kids are pretty easily impressed (which is a good thing)
sometimes the risk is in the sharing!
+ They exhibit the very characteristics of study, diligence & motivation that they are trying to develop in his or her students.
A3)Clarifies purpose & learning goals, steps offstage lets Ss take charge, gives opportunities to provide feedback, reflection
when my classroom is really humming it is a three ring circus. The energy is infectious.
I most certainly use DI for short bursts- but also lots of other tools
agree, hence I do sometimes
effective teaching often occurs when the teacher says less
Q4 same same they are in awe they are excited they want to know more they have made connections! https://t.co/XA063KSyLl
A4 when effective teaching s occurring Ss are saying, thinking & feeling "I CAN...I WILL... I WONDER...I KNOW..."
A4 They are engaged in the learning, collaborating with one another and gaining knowledge
I don't believe in a few things working for all, I believe in a many dfft things working for ddft people https://t.co/0o2CXLwkQN
Its also about using clear evidence of success and formative evaluation. Some things do work better than others.
the highly accomplished & lead descriptors are interesting ...
A4; they are feeling ownership over their learning, they are getting the feelin they can handle the "train"
Same here. I find it addictive actually. Somehow exhausting & energising all at once
Q3. Learning is more important than teaching. 'Teaching' puts too much emphasis on the teacher.
+ The majority of teachers I know have a sincere desire to improve their students’ lives.
A4: Students are engaged in authentic learning experiences, asking questions, collaborating, inquiring, living a growth mindset.
Q3: Teachers and students setting goals, teachers planning for exciting learning, teachers thinking about what next
A4: important not to mistake learning for compliance.
maybe not even knowing they have learnt so much! Yet inspired and energetic
A4 When teaching is effective students are regularly achieving beyond what they are developmentally capable.
+ Effective teachers make students feel comfortable and welcome in the classroom, show interest in their non-academic lives.
it would be nice if Ss, Ts and Parents all took responsibility for learning!
but I worry that teaching (collaboration, initiation, evaluation) isn't that linear.
What is effective teaching for you? To principals you have worked with? https://t.co/mVx3uvllPb
I hear too often from Principals this isn't the case. One size fits all teaching is becoming so common.
A4 - potential saying nothing as they are fully engaged with the topic and striving to do their very best
A4 effective teaching has students taking the learning further and sharing with others.
A4 Students are talking about the work, collaborating and are happy to answer questions & share ideas
A4: True! Students should be the makers. https://t.co/fRdHctwZsn
effective teaching often occurs when the teacher says less
comes back to self reported grades. Students always know what they will score on an assessment.
it's certainly worth looking at a variety of research, but one method or text shouldn't be hailed above all others.
+ Effective teaching adjusts its teaching methods and strategies to meet the needs of all learners.
Q3. I can teach 'effectively' but have learnt that this doesn't guarantee my students learn anything. I had to learn that.
Very, very early morning! Night all.
Doesn't it suggest that we ought to redefine "developmental capability" if sts are regularly achieving beyond it?
Students would be bored if everyone taught in the same way! Teachers are all different. Personality shines through teaching styles
A4: Helping each other, talking about their learning outside of class, asking questions, having opinions & feeling confident
I've had someone refer to my class as a theme park! Oh dear! Is that a good thing?
A4: Learning. What next? Where will this take me? Amazed that anyone can learn when they give themselves a chance!
A4: They are owning their learning, through engagement, choice and quality work!
Couldn't agree more. https://t.co/ZSbNfdCwjm
Q3. Learning is more important than teaching. 'Teaching' puts too much emphasis on the teacher.
How powerful is it to be able to influence and help others https://t.co/IKoU5mI6zu
+ The majority of teachers I know have a sincere desire to improve their students’ lives.
It's time we redefined and changed the term teaching. As much as we might love it, it's relevance today is questionable
Similar to Fullan's Professional Capital, building the teachers professional skills to best meet the situations that confront them
a good way to think of it. Start with the end in mind. The answer will be logical
Strategic Planning is crucial
you bet it is a good thing. Every one has fun at a theme park.
A4: not necessarily always growth mindset but more of reflecting on what they are learning as they learn😊 https://t.co/HFkT6N5lge
That's how we develop. Development is first social, then internal.
I so agree we must mix instruction
A3 - Ts are hearing quiet interactive and collaborative work by Ss, thinking things are working but always finding way to improve
The teacher? The school? Society?
A4 Effective teaching has students pushing beyond the classroom. Seeking knowledge independently.
A4. Questioning, collaborating, teaching others, demonstrating skill, engaged, setting goals, taking risks, being innovative
+ Effective teachers use of a variety of practices including motivating techniques, cooperative learning and peer tutoring.
interesting ... what do we change it to and what is more relevant? Control the language to improve things
A4: it looks like collaboration, conversations and community - Ss learning from each other as well as T.
Yes! That's a wonderful compliment!
q3 Effective teachers should be saying little and be giving the children the opportunities and tools to question and explore
If your questioning is good enough you can virtually use just questioning to help students make progress
in welfare effective teaching almost always comes when we listen, understand, consider, then act
A5 the society we create, some key qualities are not measurable
A5. In both qualitative & quantitative terms, from the perspectives of multiple stakeholders - avoid over-simplification!
Ss see possibilities way beyond what Ts have supported them in getting started. That's effective.
I am not suggesting we all do the same thing. I am suggesting we clearly assess what we do to make it work better.
Agree, teaching sounds old-fashioned, teacher in leading position - that's not 21st century. https://t.co/wCUrqyTbnC
It's time we redefined and changed the term teaching. As much as we might love it, it's relevance today is questionable
A5: instead of asking how to measure, shouldn't one consider if it's needed to be measured in the first place?
And owning their learning is a massive lesson to learn. Great call.
Yes! Well said! https://t.co/zkKsYej7O5
A4: They are owning their learning, through engagement, choice and quality work!
A4 they're talking &discussing the most, engaged in learning, making connections to previous learning & deepening understandings
robust reporting mechanisms. With some anecdotal measures. Self reflection. Student voice. Open discussions
Then let's make sure students see themselves as teachers, too. My students teach me amazing things each day! 😊
+ Effective teachers do not let patterns of bad behavior prevent them from maintaining the best possible learning environment.
I couldn't agree more! https://t.co/yiDIR39U5f
A4. Questioning, collaborating, teaching others, demonstrating skill, engaged, setting goals, taking risks, being innovative
A5:I think school is for preparing Ss for life after school. So effectiveness must relate to how prepared Ss are for life.
A5 If the learning design is (usually) working as intended then the teacher is effective.
A5 how much are they learning by themselves, how much are they able to seek help effectively, how many questions they ask is 1 way
Indeed... https://t.co/sRVXmWBGmP
Different things for different students & different topics. Explicit Instruction (for one) doesn't do this.
very true and so important to understand the difference
A5 When students are engaged, self motivated and are helping to foster a positive school culture "we" are effective.
even backed up by brain science
A5: I measure effectiveness of learning by seeing a student take something they have learned and applying it to another situation.
A3: Ts are feeling proud, beaming and patting on their back
Covey talks of effectiveness as getting the results you want now that lead to better results in the future
need a concrete pill. Chuck Norris could do it
A4: Ss are wondering, questioning further, bringing in their learning to real life -ACTION!
Q5 More "at the source of learning" assessment of the formative variety. Less standardized testing.
A3: I Do,We Do,You Do. Model explicitly, guide our students and then allow them the excitement of independent learning.
A5 hi all I often ask my sts "What did you learn today?"
. A5.Stand back & make OTJs(NZ assessment model-Ongoing T judgements)See S leaders of lrng & indep successful motivated achievng S
A5 By talking to students about their learning and giving them opportunity to use what they learn that isn't in a test!
Learning Opportunity Provider!
I believe we are Activators. We cultivate curiosity, ignite imagination & deepen learning opportunities
Support each other professionally is very important for the wellbeing of Ts and their impact on Ss https://t.co/kvyIsNuiDr
A3: Ts are feeling proud, beaming and patting on their back
A5. By Ss continuing to ask ?s, be engaged, not just in ClassR...Ss wanting 2 find out more...Good ? to think about ...
Q5 scares me . I'm an advocate of nurturing professional growth & teacher self-reflection rather than measuring Ts.
Agreed, yet what we do with one group of people doesn't necessarily work with others
Q4: Students have a growth mindset, they are given explicit instruction, they are motivated as school is exciting place to be
I agree here. Although teachers in difficult classes need to get help and use tools to enhance the classroom environment
A5: Listen, watch, speak with, and learn from our students...measuring effectiveness.
that's what keeps up going. A 👍🏻 from fellow Ts
But are they learning, and are they learning at high levels?
A5: Measure effectiveness using a smileometer - "positive learning" outcomes
A5 short answer we can't... Long answer is that so many variables need to be considered, including time, it's very difficult
And vice versa. Rather than "Teacher", I much prefer the title "Chief Learner" in my classroom :) https://t.co/9xPTNOD4NC
Then let's make sure students see themselves as teachers, too. My students teach me amazing things each day! 😊
A5: I think action is the most crucial gauge for effective teaching. If Ss can practically bring in their learning to real life.
But how do we know what we are doing works? How can we change and improve practice if we don't look/assess/reflect?
A5 by building a range of assessment of learning throughout the learning process, not just at the end
Engaged in a genuine learning intention and perhaps a WALT and WILF.
A5 To suggest that one teacher can be more effective than another teacher fundamentally misunderstands development.
will check this out Grazie Adriano!
You can be a POLO, proponent of learning opportunities. I like the idea of being a learner. Im a learner!
Let's follow the UK down the slippery slope of creating a culture of fear and antagonism! I hope not! https://t.co/oVz5Wcsz2z
Exactly. Change instruction to meet the needs of learning, but measure evidence of success to be sure it works.
we can measure academic effectiveness through data. Social and emotional not so easy. Risk screener, student surveys
'We are all Ts & we are all learners' - my Y6 Ss I. 2011. Fav. quote I hold onto.
Let me clarify Q5 - I'm not talking of judging Ts... I'm asking how can we best look at what we do and improve it?
but to suggest that 1 teacher can be effective for everyone in one class does too.
A5: love to read Hatties texts but think that you can't really measure education. You can only compare results.
Q5 Do Ss have the ability to take what they have learned and apply it?
+ A5: Create an environment that encourages teachers to reflect upon practice to launch up from.
Q5: Encouraging, exploring, researching, demonstrating, facilitating, motivating, inspiring
Right on! I often use the term 'learning leader' or 'learning facilitator'.
Great call JR. Use what you’ve learned and apply it to another situation.
I sincerely hope Australia does not make the same mistakes the UK has made. Just look at numbers leaving the profession over there
I guess can we say that one teacher can be seen as effective?
We need less witch hunts & more treasure hunts in education- John Hattie. Just had to
A5 effective teaching is visible, easy to observe/ experience but harder to measure. Put those evidence based practices in place!
I've had a STEM class all year. I 'taught' them nothing. I just got out of the way. 😏
A3: saying nothing, thinking "this is awesome", feeling "I have the best job in the world!
Cheers David. Just trying to pay forward the gems of wisdom that have made a deep impact on me in my career :)
A5) It sparks curiosity, questioning, reflection in the learner, the learning doesn't stop when bell rings, continues on
A5 Qualitative student feedback is a vital part of professional growth
A5: At our school, Instructional Leader measuring all sorts of data & observations about teaching, not sure I like it.
he has it wrong. More Easter egg hunts!
Q5. Why take a measurement if you're not going to make a judgement? 🙄
Look at this article on ‘Lesson Study’ Technique, a great idea on improving teaching (not Ts) from Japan https://t.co/tEatg8kSjY
Let me clarify Q5 - I'm not talking of judging Ts... I'm asking how can we best look at what we do and improve it?
That quote is located on the door to my classroom and inside my classroom...my Ss understand.😊
excellent point. Giving confidence to those that may not be ready to fully engage now shpukd be seen as effective
A5 - Create enough quality time for teachers to meet, plan, deliver & evaluate learning together https://t.co/nGZg1Hf3tX
Let me clarify Q5 - I'm not talking of judging Ts... I'm asking how can we best look at what we do and improve it?
A5. By discussing, engaging, analyzing, synthesizing and evaluating, listening challenging each other on Twitter!
A6 exploding water bottle - too easy
Why? People don't develop in one off lessons, we develop over a period, at different rates, to different ends.
You are my inspiration!!! 😊😊😊
We are co-learners. When we let go of the reins & learn together so much more is possible
+ A5: Measure it through learning walks and a peer observation culture that looks for learning.
Look @ article on ‘Lesson Study’ Technique, idea on improving teaching (not Ts) https://t.co/TIMoZ3hCjw https://t.co/tEatg8kSjY
Let me clarify Q5 - I'm not talking of judging Ts... I'm asking how can we best look at what we do and improve it?
A5 Look at student progress over time using observations, marking, mark books, progress checks, student voice, results
after last week, I am agreeing with you :)
A6 Using Minecraft to show scale and orientation
Effectiveness by mix of engagement, and assessment, behaviour, interaction
I've been thinking of this as a coach/sporting analogy all week
A6: Those lessons where I could stand out of the way of their learning and watch the S take the reins. Awesome to see!
A6. I taught this lesson a few months ago. You can hear how effective it was in the sts' emotional voices https://t.co/s2xbYBgNRw
It's about what we use assessment FOR that counts: to inform and reflect
Q5 conference circle at end of session works where sts reflect & download their learning 2 each other & clarify bits others missed
interesting! We are teams. PLT, PLC when one T succeeds everyone benefits
A6 the most memorable ones are not one-offs, but culmination of a learning process and journey by the learners
You can formatively measure evidence of success and take action on results to support learning.
A6: Explicit examples of my own failure as a learner. I've seen amazing mindset shifts from Ss knowing their teacher has failed
My Ss came up with that one day during a discussion. Very proud of them.
absolutely look, reflect, be coached, be mentored, work in PLCs, (& have mandatory appraisals) but a focus on measuring
No. Learning design matters, teacher effectiveness or quality doesn't in the long term, and it is a long term game.
I know, it's hard to compare. PISA is one opportunity. But learning process is individual.
A6: My best lessons tend to take place when I support student-driven, inquiry-based learning...facilitating their learning.
Almost "all"it takes! much easier said than done... https://t.co/71zZm0S8TU
A5 - Create enough quality time for teachers to meet, plan, deliver & evaluate learning together https://t.co/nGZg1Hf3tX
Let me clarify Q5 - I'm not talking of judging Ts... I'm asking how can we best look at what we do and improve it?
Agree, hence the need to investigate, reflect and change if necessary https://t.co/wzAMVuYVGx
we may believe at the time the teaching was effective but over time may realise there is a better way
look at a wide range of progress indicators not just one to
A6: Communication. This vid after no talking Omelette test. Its awesome. But you need a kitchen. And eggs. https://t.co/61bB7JLH1w
Q6 Letting Ss make their own term review using their choice of and play w/ each other.
I don't think I'm effective all the time. Fail early and adapt. Ts are human beings
no one teaching technique is going to work best for every student - can only do best fit in context
A6: any lesson that Ss had choice in how to show their understanding!I almost always have Ss choice- had more fun guiding them!
in the 10% effect which decays exponentially over time
Part of my ongoing goal is to start working towards creating some flipped classroom lessons https://t.co/pm7ac5rObs
A6. I taught this lesson a few months ago. You can hear how effective it was in the sts' emotional voices https://t.co/s2xbYBgNRw
Yes prepare Ss for life after school, but we are living life with them everyday and need to help them live and learn for now.
the complexity of teaching promotes fear & teaching to what's counted. See &
Be brave and film yourself activating learning in different settings. Seek feedback. Set new goals. Retake. Relearn. Grow.
Love it - and respond to build next steps. https://t.co/FBAM80qTw7
It's about what we use assessment FOR that counts: to inform and reflect
A6 Whenever we do station work, various activities are implemented and student learning is differentiated. High level of engagmnt
but if two teachers are following the same learning design...
A5: reflection is a great tool for improving the effectiveness of teaching. https://t.co/8bWrvwu5R9
+ A5: Create an environment that encourages teachers to reflect upon practice to launch up from.
+ (1/2) I share your perspective but frankly I'm over mediocre teachers.
RE this someone said on twitter the other day 'fake it to make it'.
A3. Teachers are able to step back and watch students run with the concept. All students engaged, time vanishes.
hence the importance of reflective practice
A6 Ss "how fast can a sphero go?" me "no idea (true), how could we work it out?" Best math lesson I ever had - from a Y6 student
two Ts following the same design can have two very different outcomes
success has been using tools and techniques to calm heightened S. I also have had great success with lawn bowls in PE
You & your sts will find it an immensely rewarding experience! ...after you get used to the sound of your voice ;)
+ (2/2) I feel there must be a place for acknowledging teachers who consistently achieve excellent outcomes with their students.
Allowing students to teach each other is a really powerful tool as well
A6 recently did an intro to decimals lessons with year 3 using LAB to model, Ss asked more Qs they I'd even considered
Q5: Pre and post assessments, student projects, action students take
A.5. Pappas has adapted Bloom's taxonomy for Self Reflection - just can't work out how to attach the image will do later
A4. Grumbling when the bell rings. Students are keen to continue, learn more and collaborate on a common goal.
I started doing this by accident. So pleasantly surprised by how it helped me grow as a teacher https://t.co/X2v1HW7mnb
A6) Sound quality & acoustical engineering w/3rd grade Ss, so many Qs, redesigned their bedroom for better sound using Minecraft
1 could argue a single conversation can be "more appropriate," but really in the scheme of things.
A6 - Teaching coding to different classes, last year it was with my Yr 4 Ss, this year it is my Yr 10's working on VBasic
. Just learnt something at 11.20pm at night
Thank you for welcoming this Canadian to your most engaging discussion this morning, my friends! Enjoy your evening!
IMO effectiveness needs to be tracked over time otherwise it's snapshot
A7 Get out of the way and let the Ss learn. Don't help everyone, just those that really need it.
That's not the same learning design.
A7 know the person not the data point
Always love having your perspective Chris
The magic is when students teach themselves, each other and me too. Then self assess while smiling.
A7 learn your Ss watch, listen, think, then do
Sorry , have to leave the chat, will catch up later tonight once the kids have gone back to sleep
I understand Adriano. But how can you help them get better
Really excellent questions. I was going to lurk while drinking my AM coffee but had to jump right in.
you are so right!! Learning which can be easily measured is hardly ever a new learning at all!
A6. The lessons that have taken me off the lesson plan. When you have past Ss come up to u years later with "remember when we..."
A7; remember the importance of storytelling and everything don't have an answer that can be measured
A6 Investing time in exploration & allowing all students to share & succeed then increasing the challenge
A6 I strive 2 teach effectively by deliberately using explicit +differentiated instruction & formative assessment in all lessons
no no the importance of stand up comedy!
.A7. I use & love s teaching hooks from Teach like a Pirate. The ideas behind Ken Robinson's Element
They have to want to get better first...
A7: Effective teaching includes high expectations, catering for indiv diff, monitoring/f’back, encouraging learning ownership.
A7 I like feedback strategy WWW & EBI
I use something called micro teaching where you can assess just by listening to what students are saying
A7 the best teaching happens when we observe and listen. If we are talking, anecdotes and ways to relate to real life
+ Reading: "There is an attempt to delight and interest children without talking down to them." https://t.co/upqqU2IEuf
A7 Project Based Learning, Inquiry Based Learning,
As a tech integration T my most effective classes r the 1s based on whn Ss don't even hv a clue they r learning
sticking to your L.I and S.C so you don't over complicate your lesson and confuse the Students
build relationships with children. Understand the influences behind behaviours
A6: The culmination of taking a Year 6 cohort and leading them to high school. A big year and 1 big lesson in life.
A7 depends on learning, but like dialogical approaches and those which promote metacognition and deep learning, adaptive expertise
A7 Investing time in exploration & allowing all students to share & succeed then increasing the challenge
:P i'm a very very bad comedian, but i can tell tales of legends so the time almost warp..
game based or gamification? they make the games?
It takes great leadership and facilitation to make such a grand discussion work...thank you!!!
A7: Stop talking. Llisten. Let the Ss question you. Its not about you, but about them. Let them in! Let them learn! Ask Qs. Listen
hmmm evidence for effectiveness is shaky
alternatively attach the link?
A7)Concern & respect for Ss, Ss centered, clear goals & intellectual challenge, engagement, learning from Ss
game based. A learning through playing a specific game or games where the learning is intrinsic
As someone in that system it's not great, it's come about due to governments using Ts to gain points
I know it makes some Ts cringe but I learn a lot from obvs other Ts and vice versa
My guess is that he meant he was not 'the sage on the stage'...student-driven.
Q7. Maybe the wrong Qs to ask? What are some effective learning strategies?
Must go tweeting teachers; thanks for another great chat and have a sensational week being effective
Great minds! Industrial model = Ts as holders and distributors of knowledge. Future model = Ts as learning coaches.
A6: An effective lesson: receptions were partitioning numbers - if 4 children in pool and 3 out are their still 7 all together
Should try to get them to develop a game around the learning adds more skills to the mix
Hey y'all in the middle of moving house where there's no internets just yet so pls accept my apologies for tonight
School/community context matter. We must define w/effective learning looks like, then teachers become more effective.
Yes. As activators we need to let go of perfection, accept rejection, embrace failure & succeed in the journey
A7: Clear expectations, listen to Ss, challenge them...they will rise to a challenge, give them choice and voice.
A7. We need to give students greater power with lesson flow. Often it can just be about us talking.
setting up SKILLS CENTRE where approach focus on impact of behaviour academic social and emotional & targeting all
A6: An effective lesson: receptions were partitioning numbers - if 4 children in pool and 3 out are there still 7 all together
Flexibility to allow lessons to flow in different directions guided by the Ss but then know when to bring it all back together.
Good point Simon... https://t.co/GsIc2cUrCI
Q7. Maybe the wrong Qs to ask? What are some effective learning strategies?
A7 creating a culture of thinking using approach of Harvard's Project Zero
A7. Setting high expectations & a love of learning, make learning explicit and visible, knowing your learners, Ss voice and choice
A6 A7 Ok see if this works - Pappas's model for reflection based on Bloom's Taxonomy.. thks
https://t.co/HWJF8KqHl5
Thinking the unspoken assumption here is a behaviouralist learning theory -puts importance on the teacher.
A6 I used a large model to explain a complex idea to students then got students teaching each other about it
Thanks for an amazing chat with which to kick start the new school week!
A6 Cross-curricular RE/English Q & A session: Is Aust a racist country? SS loved it
Love your input chatters. Timing is bad but post answers to and I will retweet them during chat https://t.co/mLnDqcX5BX
A7: Eye contact, pause, giving enough info but not too much, meaningful repetition - review ......
