Hello everyone I am Steven Yates, president of @AASL and School Library program coordinator at @BamaSLIS! I am PASSIONATE about advocacy and look forward to visiting with you, #txlchat! #AASLslm#SLM18
Judi checking in from Tucson, AZ - 98 degrees cool today in the desert... Excited to share ideas about #advocacy w/ #txlchat & @aasl President @HeyLibraraman (aka Steven Yates)!
Howdy #txlchat I'm Len, a Texas transplant in Hillsboro, Oregon. Currently serving 21,000-+ students @hillsboro_sd as their District Librarian! Looking forward to learning about advocating for my students!
My one word = exhausted.
(New Dad) :)
A1 pt. 2-Be the social media person at you campus,be present at events, find well known advocates in the community, brag to whomever will listen at campus and community level. Get the media involved when appropriate, don’t stop sharing your story down every possible avenue #txlchat
A1 pt.1-If we want to be taken seriously, stay relevant, and funded we need those in our close and wider community to know what we are doing matters. We can’t assume that everyone has a soft spot for libraries and we need to show our value and how we serve our communities. #txlchat
Q1 Why is it important for school libraries to share their story, and what are the best ways to share those stories with the community? #txlchat@HeyLibraraman
A1 Libraries are not the same as the ones we grew up with. We have to show how libraries (& librarians) are vital members of the school & greater community. Build capacity in others to tell our stories #TXLCHAT
A1 No one will share our story if we don't. It's all up to us! @Twitter is perhaps the widest-reaching tool there is. @SmorePages are great to share with district decision-makers. The mix of text, pics, and video is perfect! #txlchat
I have realized to always be in contact with your admin and let them know about everything you are doing. This helps a lot in building relationships. #txlchat
A2 sneaking in here from SanAntonio. I want to tell my story because it’s uniquely mine! I want to make sure the facts about my story are accurate😉 #txlchat
Q1 Why is it important for school libraries to share their story, and what are the best ways to share those stories with the community? #txlchat@HeyLibraraman
A1 So important that we share what we are doing constantly otherwise people think you sit around googling all day and just check out books. Share on website, newsletters, events, Twitter. #txlchat
A1: We see our Ss' eyes light up every day and we have to share that excitement with our community from the grocery store to the elevator! The sparks of learning are what we have the distinct joy of fanning every day. If we aren't excited about that, who will be?! #txlchat
A1: No one is going to tell the story of school libraries beside school librarians. We are even more effective if we can help others tell our stories - students, parents, teachers, community leaders. I share our stories via social media and in informal chats in person. #txlchat
A1: ppl from all walks of life need to know the impact a school library has on students, the campus, & community. It's more than just a lending center, we change lives!! Social media is a great way to stretch ur reach & share w/ others. #txlchat
Q1 Why is it important for school libraries to share their story, and what are the best ways to share those stories with the community? #txlchat@HeyLibraraman
A1: How to promote? I read an article today that I wanted to share: blog, tweet, and any kind of social media you can get your hands on! Try it! #txlchat
A1 if we don’t tell our story no one will. Social media is a great start to getting to the community. Collaborating with some one in the community builds all kinds of bridges.
A1: If we don’t share our stories, then who will? We must share what we are doing and share it loudly. Social Media has been a huge way for me to get the word out about my program and presenting at conferences and workshops. #txlchat
One of the best things that I did to share my story was start a blog called, The Library Voice, that told the story of the learning, reading, creating, etc... from our school, not just the library. It showed collaboration & being connected. :) #txlchat
A1 School libraries should share bc they are the heart of the school. TLs can assist through all curriculum areas & for PD. Share online. Be a #connectededucator take pictures, create a summary for your admin. #txlchat
A2 Research organizations in your community and find a viable way to partner with, contact them, follow up,create advocates through these partnerships. For parents have a social media presence esp. on Facebook. Create parent advocates through personal relationships #txlchat
A1 Our story is what is happening, how we are adding to the awesome of our school. Sharing online, in the grocery store, Facebook, whenever. #txlchat Lots is on our website, but Twitter & Instagram too (and yearbook)
A1: In order to make the biggest impact we have to share our story, or others don't know what we can do for them. Sharing through @Twitter@Blogger is a great way to get our story out there. #txlchat
A1: It's important to share our stories to bring attention to libraries. People don't know or understand what is happening in the library and this is one way to let people know what is happening in the library. How should information get out - anyway we can. #txlchat
A1 I shared on all different types of social media....Anywhere that my people were at...and with others around the world too. The kids loved sharing their stories everyday too. #txlchat
A1 Librarians need to advocate and share their stories with their administrators, school board and community. Keep statistics and share them regularly in a library newsletter, on your website and blog. Work with your local public library and collaborate with them. #txlchat
A1. It’s important to share our story so more Ts and Ss can take part. Libraries and librarians have so much to offer and enrich- but many still don’t know this. #txlchat
Catch what our #wapoetlaureate writes “Because a hand that turns pages of a book collectively owned feeds a gracious and gentle thing” Hello to #txlchat from Billy’s Inn Denver!
I only got to go 2 days and it was a short train ride downtown so I'm not feeling the post -TLA tired. I'm pretty sure I'll be STAAR tired by Friday though. #txlchat
A2: My favorite strategy for building partnerships with community groups is offering up the library space for their meetings, then asking for 5 minutes to tell them abut how libraries have changed and are changing the kids' lives. #txlchat
A1 pt 1 It is important for us to be heard, so that those around our community know that we are their to support EVERYONE! #txlchat#aaslstandards#aaslslm#slm18
Q1 Why is it important for school libraries to share their story, and what are the best ways to share those stories with the community? #txlchat@HeyLibraraman
A1: Who can tell your library’s story better than the you? Social media is great, but nothing beats inviting people in! Get your admin out of their office! 😉 #txlchat
OH YES...Isn't that so true! Parents love being able to share what is going on in the library with their networks...even on their FB or Instagram. :) #txlchat
A2 I always make sure to attend at least one school board meeting to greet our board members. Visit local businesses that contribute to activities and events. Ask how you can partner with them. #txlchat
Q1 Why is it important for school libraries to share their story, and what are the best ways to share those stories with the community? #txlchat@HeyLibraraman
Q2 I reach out to them any way I can. It’s good to TALK to teachers, students and see how they can bring in the outside school community to our projects/events. I feel there is more involvement with there’s a personal connection. #txlchat
A2 Make yourself visible and available. Place info about the library at the receptionist desk and in the registrar's office. A lib in my district gives each new S a welcome bag with a free book, lib brochure, and her contact info. #txlchat
A2: #txlchat Partnerships happen in the halls, before and after meetings, in line for bio breaks at PD meetings, my cousin's 1st grade choir concert. If you're not like me and happy to chat anytime, maybe a fun library-themed shirt will help start those conversations! #AASLslm
A2b
also have Ss do a community outreach project. We usually do bookmarks for #GreatKindnessChallenge and I hide them all around town with our campus hashtag so finders can post. #txlchat
A1: Sharing your library school story helps parents and staff to see more of the whole library picture. What happens, what your librarian can do for you, and all the good stuff we can offer. #txlchat
A2: Build partnerships by meeting with others that have like interests and are willing to help with activities. By volunteering with other organizations, you make connections that will help build your library program. #txlchat
a2 Hosting clubs after/before school, selling tickets at multiple athletic events, walking to local businesses with your principal, volunteering... #txlchat
Q3 Introducing the #AASLStandards to your community provides numerous opportunities for powerful advocacy conversations. What stakeholder group are you planning to share the standards with next? Don't forget the resources at https://t.co/0xvhJPVeEC! #txlchat@HeyLibraraman
A2 Find out what your parents are passionate about, what their hobbies and careers are. Use those skills to not only bring them into the library, but to have them be an important part of the learning too. It means a lot to them and their kids. #txlchat
A1 I tweet a lot of pictures about what’s going on in the library. We are a big Twitter school so I know it helps when are and admin see pics of innovative lessons and programs happening in the library #txlchat
A2: I build partnerships with parents by joining our school's PTA. I volunteer for them, and in turn, they volunteer for me and are able to see our library in action. #txlchat
A2 This is only our 2nd year open, so this has still been a challenge for me! But since coming back from TLA my first big step is getting students to @aldinelibrary & B&N events #txlchat#aaslstandards#aaslslm#slm18
Just want to pop in and say HI! ❤️ I am at mandatory parent/ new NHS inductee meetings tonight at school, but telling our story is so important! If we don’t tell it, no one will! #txlchat
#txlchat I used to keep bookmarks at the school's front desk with passwords for our online resources & a sign saying "We have a gift for you"
I need to start doing that again.
A3: Our district has TOSAs (Teachers on Special Assignment) - kinda like curriculum leads. I have been weaving the standards into my conversations with them and strategically leaving my copy of the book where they stumble upon it! #txlchat
A2: I try to chat with parents at assemblies and give a short snippet of what our school library can offer them. Many parents contact me through Facebook. Great volunteer contacts this way. #txlchat
A3 We plan on sharing the standards with our admin support staff first and then with our campus leadership. We feel like once we have their support and collaboration we will have an easier time working with the rest of our staff #txlchat
A3 A few libs have talked about ways we can share the #aaslstandards with principals. Maybe a series of videos posted to the district website? #txlchat
Yes to library themed-shirts! @HeyLibraraman They do get attention and serve as conversation starters. Great reminder of visual invitation to chat, ask questions, get to know others, share... #txlchat#AASLslm
A2: #txlchat Partnerships happen in the halls, before and after meetings, in line for bio breaks at PD meetings, my cousin's 1st grade choir concert. If you're not like me and happy to chat anytime, maybe a fun library-themed shirt will help start those conversations! #AASLslm
A3: I am fortunate to work with @YISDLibServices in presenting at our local conference! I hope this with help other local librarians to understand and open a dialogue towards the standards! #txlchat
A3: Oh now here's the good stuff! #AASLStandards! I am headed to the @ALLibAssoc annual conference before dawn to help share the wonderful common beliefs and shared foundations. Be sure you share with all of your @ALALibrary chapter colleagues across Texas (& beyond)! #txlchat
A1 It’s like Alice’s looking glass... does your story look and sound the way you want it to be told? If you don’t tell your story, someone else will... is it worth repeating? I love @twitter - the portability of information goes far & wide! #txlchat
A3 It would be great to share the standards with tech directors and see how they can help achieve goals. Also it may open eyes to what we do that overlaps! #txlchat
A3: I'd love to have a meeting with the superintendent to discuss the new standards, but realistically, I'll settle for any of the administration. Too often libraries are put on the back burner when we should be igniting the pilot. #txlchat
A2: #txlchat Partnerships happen in the halls, before and after meetings, in line for bio breaks at PD meetings, my cousin's 1st grade choir concert. If you're not like me and happy to chat anytime, maybe a fun library-themed shirt will help start those conversations! #AASLslm
A3: I would love to show them to my coworkers and how we can implement them into the curriculum. That way they can see the opportunities and potential of the library! #txlchat
Yes, that is the key. The very thing we all must do is make the library the heart of the school by building the relationships with everyone in the community. This is when all of the other pieces fall into place. That is the best. :) #txlchat
Yes to the library-themed shirts! I have the best conversations with our staff about libraries when they comment about how much they like my shirts! #txlchat
Q4 In our roles as chief access officers in schools, school librarians are advocates every day. Please share something you did today that demonstrated the power of a school library to your community. #txlchat@HeyLibraraman
A3 I will start with sharing these with my administrators (after I have a better understanding) and then all other educators!!! #aaslstandards#TxLChat#AASLslm#SLM18
Q3 Introducing the #AASLStandards to your community provides numerous opportunities for powerful advocacy conversations. What stakeholder group are you planning to share the standards with next? Don't forget the resources at https://t.co/0xvhJPVeEC! #txlchat@HeyLibraraman
I agree. Half my closet now consists of reading or library themed shirts. Fortunately I work in just the right place to wear them. Great convo starters.#txlchat
April is National School Library Month! Help us celebrate by recognizing the important work of more than 1,100 library media specialists in Kentucky public schools. @aasl#AASLslm#Kylchat#KYSLM18
A4 my super put me in charge of our district #FutureReadySchools everything. Putting together the team, evaluating the district. I'm excited to be able to pull in TLs and teachers to collab on this. After that we will add in some community members! #txlchat
A4 Today we collabed with an ELA rockstar T to create a unique student centered lesson on graphic novels,we changed our plans for tomorrow and now we're doing a pop up library so space can be used for make up STAAR,shared our #schoollibrarymonth plans on social media #txlchat
A3: I would like to build a better partnership with the PTSA at my school. I think by sharing the #AASLstandards I can show how what happens in the library can impact every student! #mpjheagles#txlchat
When we reviewed them as a group, we read over them and reflected on where we were as a district & determining areas still needing work #txlchat#aaslstandards
A4: I taught an information literacy lesson to 3rd and 4th graders at one of my 25 elementary schools. They were doing an inquiry project on marine mammals, and we had parent volunteers and other grownups stop by to watch/listen/try our databases! #txlchat
I share on Twitter and Instagram regularly. I’ve also have invited legislators to our space with guided tours and discussion about our LMC and it’s impact throughout our building and beyond.?#txlchat
Q4 In our roles as chief access officers in schools, school librarians are advocates every day. Please share something you did today that demonstrated the power of a school library to your community. #txlchat@HeyLibraraman
Hi it's Barbara @SherrodSchLib#txlchat, I have been on this band wagon for the last few years. Use Twitter, webpage, blog, and paper handouts, bookmarks, if necessary.
TASL is working on documents to share with parents in a variety of settings -- hoping to get these up on the website in the next few months. @TxASL#txlchat
A2: I try to chat with parents at assemblies and give a short snippet of what our school library can offer them. Many parents contact me through Facebook. Great volunteer contacts this way. #txlchat
A4 I got to send out information about summer literacy programs for migrant workers. How great is that?! Partnership with ESC, public and school libraries. #txlchat
A4 In talks with another dept to develop some parent nights that take place in campus libraries. We teach parents comp skills while Ss have access to STEAM & literacy activities. Very early in the process, but we are all excited! #txlchat
Ditto what @lenbryan25 said. Start w/ a friendly parent (volunteer?), collaborating T, group of Ss, or supportive admin. Let them know how much you/library program are helping them achieve their goals. #txlchat
In reply to
@lenbryan25, @mrsjadams13, @lenbryan25
The librarians in our district are managed partly by ELAR and curriculum, partly by technology services. Not a bad relationship, as that hits two of our key areas of service. #txlchat
A4: #txlchat Today's advocacy was super easy! I thanked @SenDougJones for signing the LSTA and IAL letters! The @ala_wo makes reaching our legislators effortless and it really makes a difference! Don't forget to share personal stories and pictures when contacting them! #AASLslm
A4: The lib was closed for STAAR testing today. Since I wasn’t administering the test I went to classrooms and did my lesson. Stdts will exchange books tomorrow. Access is my priority! #txlchat
I’m sharing a link to a tweet I posted today. Starting a community conversation about mental health in cooperation with our counselors& GT class https://t.co/nYUNUBb3kH#txlchat
Q4 In our roles as chief access officers in schools, school librarians are advocates every day. Please share something you did today that demonstrated the power of a school library to your community. #txlchat@HeyLibraraman
a4 We (@JenGilbert42) checked out a ton of books, shared eBook resources, cut some bamboo with the miter saw, ran two 3D print jobs, a few laser cutter jobs, sponsored students in a State entrepreneurial challenge at @uofl#txlchat
Q5 In honor of school library month, please share a snapshot of your library--pictures, descriptions of learning activities, etc. #txlchat@HeyLibraraman
A4 Today we had testing, so I was helping out with that along with trying to get flyers I made with events for Public Library & B&N! #aaslstandards#TxLChat#AASLslm#slm18
Q4 In our roles as chief access officers in schools, school librarians are advocates every day. Please share something you did today that demonstrated the power of a school library to your community. #txlchat@HeyLibraraman
I am so proud of you and SUPER excited for this, my friend. Ever since you told me, I think about it and smile. You are making such a difference for everyone in your district. <3 #futureready#futurereadylibs#txlchat
A4 I too STAAR tested but on Friday ...I had all of our teachers cheer on our 5th graders with @Flipgrid even got assist superintendent to create encouraging vid. #txlchat
A4: I had a 2nd class outside writing sensory poems and the entire office staff came out because they saw a bunch of kids on the security camera! 😂 Gave me the opportunity to explain what we were doing and how the library was supporting ELA teachers #txlchat
Q4 In our roles as chief access officers in schools, school librarians are advocates every day. Please share something you did today that demonstrated the power of a school library to your community. #txlchat@HeyLibraraman
A4: Today was STAAR testing so I advocated by being a team player available to pitch in where needed even it if meant two hours of lunch duty. I got to chat with kiddos about what they were reading and all the new books we have gotten. #txlchat
A2 listen and learn what they are all whether is a community member or a parent wanting to help... how can they be part of the larger community to benefit the library #txlchat
A4: Sorry, dinner was burning 😂. I was at a technology PLG by @UofARIC learning lots of awesome tech tools that I will turn around to my teachers. It is so important to provide PD to our staff so you build those relationships. #txlchat
Remembering that the library is ALWAYS more than the four walls with a name on the door is the KEY to our continued relevance! Rock on, @hjankowski! #AASLslm#SLM18#txlchat
A5 Lots of stuff going on in our library during #SchoolLibraryMonth Paint Night, book club, Top 25 Luncheon, 30 Days of Happiness Challenge, Seed Bomb making workshop, and pancake breakfast #txlchat
A4 - planning and presenting professional development as we make some technology transitions helps demonstrate the power and value - the relevance - of the school library/librarian. #txlchat
A4: Quickly downloaded Destiny Offline when I was notified that Destiny was being updated - knew students would need books after testing to get ready for day 2 of testing. Libraries are flexible and I showed that today. #txlchat
I know STAAR is going on, and I had an idea - if you're stuck administering tests, how about doing so joyfully and showing what a team player you are? I know, easier said than done! :) #txlchat
#txlchat EOC STAAR Testing today. Encouraged students and reminded them - YOU WILL DO GREAT! They know we believe in them! @South_Library students know they belong.
Q4 In our roles as chief access officers in schools, school librarians are advocates every day. Please share something you did today that demonstrated the power of a school library to your community. #txlchat@HeyLibraraman
Ss in Biomedical Science are researching and designing a prototype. They will print 3d prototypes of design. Each one of them has a role. ❤️ the inquiry! #leanderisdlib
I bet they look awesome, friend. <3 I always loved having events there because the kids could be involved....the band would play, the choir would sing, the chess and LEGO club would come, and art club would do decorations. #txlchat
A5 My library are ALL of the libraries in Garland ISD! Here's a collage of our awesome librarians exploring the #aaslstandards this past February! #txlchat#GISDLibraries

also have Ss do a community outreach project. We usually do bookmarks for #GreatKindnessChallenge and I hide them all around town with our campus hashtag so finders can post. #txlchat
A5: pics on my school handle @RHSLibrary_CFB. Snap shot: students hanging around circ desks, others playing board games, others working and reading. Accessible and fun place & a place where Ss can check out books and where Ts can bring Ss 4 a fun be lesson #txlchat
Q5 In honor of school library month, please share a snapshot of your library--pictures, descriptions of learning activities, etc. #txlchat@HeyLibraraman

Yes, @lenbryan25! I actually miss the fellowship of testing when I was in practice! It's important to contribute to school productivity across the curriculum and even when it isn't convenient. It takes us all working together! #txlchat#SLM18
A5: Libraries are a place where students can learn, create, inspire, and open so many doors. My students love makerspaces, the Books, technology lessons, breakout, and just being able to stop by and escape for a little while. #txlchat
Yes-we provides supplies, students created their own. We had quite a few boys create them😍 Thought someone could turn it into a promposal-but alas, no takers😂! #txlchat

Lots of new faces tonight! Thanks to all for joining us! Hope to see you again next week. And thanks to special guess @AASL president @HeyLibraraman for making time to join the conversations. #txlchat
A4 involves with testing most of the day, but I did get to go out to a class to work on a project-based 3D design project. Demonstrates the TLs can leave the library (!) to support Ts and Ss in innovative learning. TLs provide new opportunities. #txlchat
Thank you for a wonderful #txlchat everyone...It was so much fun hearing and seeing what is happening in your libraries and how you are sharing your story. <3 #futurereadylibs#SLM18#AASLslm
A5 Working with third graders on Destiny Quest, did some coding with 1st & 2nd and the did some coding on the iPad with prekindergarten. Busy but successful day. #txlchat
